Beginning with the striking Wairua Puhou group, lead by Mac Te Ngahue the vast amount of talent seen in the students was inspiring. To note a few of these performances from the evening we had; Rose Stevenson and Malina Rutt playing ‘Vivaldi Duet For Two Violins in A Minor’, the Pacific Pearls harmonic singing, Sabrina Swertloff’s Slam poem ‘Biology’and Sarah Johnson singing her song ‘Another Day’. At one stage the audience went a bit wild as Mr Shields, the Choir and Jazz band took to the stage playing Dr Martin’s ‘Mr Shields on the Catwalk’, and the notable performance by Drama Department's hilarious, student written ‘Polar Opposites’. With an eclectic mix of performance from Jazz, Chamber Music and Pacific Song to the student created works of Dance, Theatre, Slam Poetry and Music the evening was full to the brim with creativity.

Celebrating students in over thirteen Arts and Culture categories alongside the over arching Scholar category, students were awarded either a Certificate, a Cultural Blue or Scholarship Blue Award for Excellence, Service and Achievement.

An evening of celebration, in recognising the students who have chosen to pursue excellence in their field of Arts and Culture, it is also an important moment to pause and acknowledge the tireless effort of our talented teachers who continuously aid the students in their endeavours; alongside the parents and caregivers that encourage their children to become involved in the arts and consistent in their pursuit.

During the evening we heard our guest speaker Dr. Cruz-Banks, the Senior Dance Lecturer at the University of Otago share some wisdom gained from her life experience as a creative in her field. With over 2 decades of experience in dance, Dr Cruz-Banks highlighted how creativity has been integral to the development of her self awareness, personal growth, perseverance and gaining a real life connection to global communities, inspiring connection, movement and rhythm. The result - a life of art in practice.

A big thank you to the beautiful Christine Cook for all the tasty platters made for the evening and the other Arts and Culture staff that helped the evening run so smoothly.

Please find below a list of Blues Recipients for 2017 Arts and Culture at Otago Girls High School.

Wairua Puhou Blues

Nikita Gibson

Christie Haua

Del'chez Lawson

Anja Matapo

Pasifika Blues

Loisi Afimeimounga

Rangi Brydon

Storm Maole

Lilly Sopoaga

Akamura Tioti

Karaleani Vakalala

Music-Instrumental Blues

Renee Mullins

Rose Stevenson

Sarah de Vries

Josie Frazer

Choir Blues

Meg Cunningham-Tisdall

Josephine Frazer

Lucy Pollock

Meredith Walker

Sarah Hubbard

Visual Arts Blues

Holly Mason

Charlotte Woodhouse

Jess Greenan

Brianna Markham

Veronica Wallace

Ariana Knudson-Hollebon

Sophie Sowerby

Laura Kennelly

Annabelle Latta

Technology Blues

Holly Mason

Ariana Knudson-Hollebon

Tuihana Taiaroa-Smithies

Enviroschools Blues

Josie Frazer

Anya Kardailsky

Community Service Blues

Caitlyn Smith

Jemma Jeong

Amara Muldrew

Grace Hayward

Drama Blues

Molly Parker

Larissa Howie

Emily Atkinson

Sarah Hubbard

Josephine Frazer

Surrey Fisher

Dance Blues

Priyanka Poulton

Danielle Lee

Annabel Marshall

Blaire Hanna

Summer Johnson

Bethany Astwood

Stage Challenge Blues

Danielle Lee

Annabel Marshall

Amara Muldrew

Kaila Jowsey

Sarah Jocelyn

Debating Blues

Sabrina Swerdloff

Anna Dawes

Public Speaking Blues

Alex Martin

Hayley Dick

Nga Manu Korero Blues

Hannah

Matehaere

Scholar Blues

Lucy Matehaere

Anna Dawes

Jess Tyrrell

May Cavanagh

Louise Lin

Hannah King

Ruby Franks

Bryn McBurney

Meredith Walker

Madeleine Reid

Rose Stephenson

Cecile Wagener

Emily Harrex

Elena Bostina

Emma Ward

Annabel Low

Malina Rutt

Lily Johnston

Katelyn Phillips

Katie Gotlieb

Elsa Neuman

Muychheng Oeng

Maddie Millhouse

Lucy Pollock

House Haka Competition

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the OG's House Haka Competition. We ended up tying with Kings' High School and had two tough rounds of tie-breakers. Unfortunately, Kings' won the tiebreaker, but Otago Girls' was offered a place in the finals as a "wild card" entry. We took this opportunity by the reins and went into the finals, ready for a challenge, and to fight for a place as the Dunedin representatives in the South Island competition. We competed against Otago Boys’, East Otago and King's High Schools. Following a tight competition, we came out in second place, just two points behind the winning team from Otago Boys’.

In both the semifinals and finals, we had three rounds of improvisation games. The first round, the blind round, involved an approximately two-minute game which was thrown at the team (teams do not know which game they will play until they get on stage). The second round, the game round, is a three minute game of the team’s choice. The third round, the challenge round, is a four minute game of the team’s choice, however, they must incorporate a challenge which another team has set for them such as, “you must incorporate an elephant in your scene”, or “every sentence must begin with the letter A.” Teams are then scored out of five for entertainment and out of five for technique, one being the worst, five being the absolute best.

One of our team members, Caitlin Penhey, received an award for best team player of the final’s tournament. This meant that Caitlin was the most supportive of her team and ensured that she helped set up scenes that would help her fellow team members shine on stage.

As the Theatresports cultural coordinator, I have been extremely lucky to watch my fellow team members and the other girls involved in Theatresports develop into confident young women who are happy to show their skills on the stage. I was most proud to witness the sportsmanship and encouragement that my team members displayed within our team and towards other schools, a true reflection of our PB4L values.

Thank you to all the staff and students who have supported the growth of Theatresports at Otago Girls’. Myself and the students involved are most grateful for the opportunity to find our calling and have to the pursuit of our passion supported. Theatresports is open to all students and takes place on a Wednesday lunchtime in the Little Theatre in the VPA.

“What's great about collaborating is getting to work with wonderful people. This competition is held once every two years with the top two teams gaining entry into the national championships held the following year. Our rōpū and tutors have put in a lot of time preparing for Te Hautoka with many weekends, lunchtimes and after school hours being put in. We all met at Otago Girls’ High school on Friday night to have a noho before the big day. However Te Hautoka got postponed until Sunday because of the bad weather and flooding so everybody stayed in the VPA on Saturday night as well. This was a great bonding opportunity which brought everyone closer together and also allowed the group some extra practice time. Mrs Davidson allowed us to have showers in the gym and Matua Mac and Whaea Vicki made sure everyone was fed, looked after and that all of the students and helpers were safe. We would also like to thank all of the parents who visited us in the bad weather who brought in food and things that would help us, it was much appreciated.

Finally the big day had arrived everyone began preparation in the gym with hair and makeup with the help of Te Rina and her friends and the boys got their tāmoko (Māori stencil patterns) done thanks to Kaharau and his friends. Once everyone had their kākahu (clothes/ costumes) done, we made our way to the Dunedin town hall. We did really well this year by placing 2nd overall. However we were 1st in Whakawatea (departing the stage song), the Poi and the Waiata-a-ringa (action song), 2nd in the Whakaeke (entry onto the stage song/ haka), the Moteatea (song of remembrance) and the Haka which meant that we qualified for Nationals next year which are being held in Palmerston North. A special thanks to Mr Pickard for carving the new haka trophy and for making new tāmoko stencils. We would like to thank all of the support we have received over the year from teachers, family and friends of Wairua Pūhou, bring on Nationals!

Rachel O’Kane and Jen Marsh

Junior Production 'Campaign Central!'

A 45 minute Performance, written by one of our own staff members, Kathryn Dick ‘Campaign Central’ was put together over 10 weeks of rehearsals during Otago Girls' High School's Clubs program. Well, this is how our performance began, with a class of questioning students who at first were not interested in learning about Seacliff. However, when three students got dragged through a large book on the history of Seacliff, everything quickly changed as they became part of the past. The students were suddenly caught within the asylum, stuck in witnessing the experiences of those inside the asylum. Finally able to return to the classroom, the students were able to learn a valuable lesson of how the past can affect and help shape the future’ – Sarah Jocelyn.

Nga Manu Korero

Otago Girls High School hosted the prestigious Ngā Manu Kōrero Regional Speech Competitions over the weekend.Friday’s pōwhiri was exciting with our own Wairua Pūhou teaming up with He Waka Kōtuia Kings and Queens kapa haka bellowing out a hearty rendition of Pāpaki Kau Ana and Toia Mai in the haka powhiri, welcoming last year’s winners with their returning trophies and other schools and guests from around Otago and Southland. The kai kōrero (male speakers) spoke on behalf of the hosts and visitors, our kaumatua Matua Peter Kara opened the competition with a karakia (prayer). From there it was a quick turnaround before we were straight into the senior impromptu speeches.

We were represented again this year by sisters, Lucy and Hannah Matehaere. We had some fantastic results with Hannah Matehaere winning First Place in the Junior English section and retaining the Sir Turi Carroll Junior English trophy that she won last year and Lucy Matehaeree winning Third Place in the impromptu section, an outstanding effort.

Lucy and Hannah’s speeches were supported by Wairua Pūhou and members of Kāhui Kōrero (Otago Girls Māori Student Council) and then we all went into host mode acting as guides and runners for the judges, teachers in charge and other workers behind the scenes. Our girls ran the back stage with mic-ing up the speakers and running the sound desk and helped with setting up the different areas around the school. We were running the security and sustaining the mana of the school by keeping an eye on areas that were off limits and checking the toilets and keeping them clean and by picking up any extra rubbish.

Over 300 people attended the 2 day event and there were some powerful speeches delivered. A favourite part was the whanaungātanga, when all of our schools came together and played Māori games. At one point there would have been over 100 students playing iti rakiraki (little duck) in a big circle out the front of our school, it was very funny. We enjoyed listening to the speeches and the support songs and haka that went after each school’s representatives had finished speaking. The weekend was an outstanding success with the organisers of the event saying OGHS was the best venue they have used yet.
